School Governors - Become a Governor

Why do it?
Being a school governor is extremely rewarding. It¹s an excellent way of becoming part of the school community and making a difference to how the school is run.

No special qualifications are required. We don¹t need education experts, just enthusiasm. Lots of training is available, making it a great way to gain new skills. We give every new governor a Buddy¹ to help them get to grips with their new role.

What's required of governors?
The role of governor is voluntary. Any time a governor spends carrying out their duties is appreciated and makes a difference to the school. As a minimum we would like Earlsfield governors to do the following:

  • attend termly full governing body meetings
These are usually on Wednesdays. They start at 6.30pm and tend to go on until at least 9.30pm. Minutes and other materials are circulated a couple of weeks before the meeting and usually take about two hours to read.
  • attend two termly sub-committee meetings
There are three committees curriculum and attainment, resources, children, families and community. Every governor is a member of two committees. They meet at 8am and childcare is provided. It usually takes between one and two hours to read the meeting papers.
  • visit the school once a term
Every governor is either linked to a year group or to an important area of work, such as special educational needs. Visits are a way of finding out what¹s going on. They vary in length but usually last a few hours.
  • attend at least one school event a year, such as an assembly or school
    concert.

The role is unpaid but governors can claim for any costs they incur, such as parking and childcare.
