Eco Schools - Working towards our Eco Award

The nine topics within Eco Schools - How we are working towards gaining an eco award:

 

 

Water Butts

 Turn off taps properly. Use rainwater to maintain the gardens
Action
We currently have five water butts around the school. Children access these to water the plants in the nursery garden, reception garden and pond area. Sinks in the Early Years have push taps to conserve water.

 

Enviornment of School

We will take care of the school environment nad encourage wild life.
Action
Areas within the school have been developed to allow opportunities for planting. We currently have an after school gardening club and willbe starting lunchtime activiites soon.

 

Lighting

Energy
Eco Code
We will turn off lights when not in use and check that all computers are switched off at the end of the day.
Action
The whole school community will be involved in measuring energy used. Eco warriors will monitor classrooms and be responsible for checking that computers suites are off at the end of the day.

 

World

Global perspectives
Eco Code
Pupils gain knowledge and values to be responsible members of a global society.
Action
Earlsfield Primary School will be linking with a school in Africa. Children will have the opportunity to communicare with children and learn about their lives, reflecting on the impact of environmental issues around the world.

 

Healthy Food
Healthy Living
Eco Code
We will ensure children have a healthy lunch and access a range of activities that promote health and well being.
Action
We monitor lunches to ensure they provide children with a well balance and nutritional meal. PE sessions and access to games equipment at lunch times promote activity and movement.

 

Litter

We will pick up litter and keep our school and surrounding environment tidy.
Action
We are proud that our school grounds are almost litter free. Eco warrior monitors will be taking responsibility for clearing waste after the weekly 'Snack Attack' stall.

Our school grounds will reflect our Eco code and provide a stimulating and safe environment for our children to learn in.
Action
Water butts and composting / recycling bins are situated within the school grounds. By the spring term classes will be using outdoor planters to grow vegetables. The playground is being developed to enable children to access the nature area more freely. More work is planned for the future.

We will walk to school when we can
Action
Bike and scooter racks have been fitted in school playgrounds. A number of children arrive at school on the walking bus.

 

Waste

We will recycle, and reuse as much as possible. We will compost waste to help our garden.
Action
More recycling bins have been added to the school grounds. Lunchtime food waste is composted. All packed lunch waste is sent home for recycling. Eco Warriors will be responsible for ensureing classroom recycling boxes are emptied each day.
